Colored Gem Price Factors :

Following factors can affect the prices of coloured gemstones:

-          Color

-          Clarity

-          Transparency

-          Shape

-          Cutting Style

-          Cut Quality

-          Carat Weight or stone size

-          Treatment status

-          Place of Origin

-          Distinctness of phenomena

Transparency:

Transparency is the degree to which a gem is clear, hazy, translucent or opaque. Normally the higher the transparency the more valuable the stone.  There are a few exceptional Rubies and sapphires which microscopic particles which disperse color, may be valued the same or sometimes a bit more than stones with a diamond-like transparency.  For black opal, opaque stones tend to be more highly valued than those with a higher transparency.

Tranparency can have a major impact on the value of a gemstone, especially for emerald, sapphire, opal, jade, star gems adcats eye gems.

Shape:

Shape is a gem’s face-up outline (e.g. round or pear shaped).  Color, clarity and transparency normally play a greater role in determining the price of colored gems than shape, cutting style and cut quality.  Nevertheless, these later 3 factors can affect the value of such gem stones.

The effect of shape on price varies depending on the seller, the gem variety, the stone weight, the stone quality and the demand for the shape  A high quality, 1 carat round ruby may cost 10 to 20% more then one with an oval shape because of greater demand and because there is more weight loss from the rough when cutting rounds.  In small sizes and low qualities, the shape may have no effect on the price.  The subject of shape pricing is complex.  Simply remember to compare gemstones of the same shape and cutting style when evaluating gem prices.  The symmetry of the shape outline can also affect the per carat price of large, high quality gems because symmetrical stones are desirable and may require more loss of weight from the rough.

Engagement Ring Options - When a Diamond Won't Do

 Diamond Alternatives

By Carly Wickell,

If you think engagement rings must always contain diamonds, think again. I'm pleased to share the following advice about alternative choices for your engagement ring.

My guest is Antoinette Matlins, P.G., gem and jewelry expert and author of many books, including: "Engagement & Wedding Rings: The Definitive Buying Guide For People in Love!" Published by GemStone Press, Woodstock, VT.

Break away from modern tradition and choose something other than a diamond engagement ring. Ms. Matlins offers some tips.

He Can't Afford a Diamond, So What's the Poor Guy to Do?

A young man recently asked me a question that really got my attention. He wanted to "pop the question" but couldn't afford a diamond. Nonetheless, he wanted to mark the moment with a ring and asked about buying an imitation CZ or "synthetic moissanite," the new diamond imitation that fools diamond testers.

Well, it may fool some, but it will never fool her. Nor should you even try. For all you men out there facing the same dilemma, take heart. Today there are many romantic, and affordable, alternatives with which to create that special moment.

First, the most important thing about an engagement ring is its symbolism. The ring itself is meant to symbolize something beautiful, rare, and precious—like the love the couple hopes to share for life. It doesn't have to be costly, and it doesn't have to be a diamond ring (just take a look at the royal family—the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Anne and Princess Diana received sapphire engagement rings, and Princess Sarah Ferguson, a ruby). It simply has to show thoughtfulness and caring, and incorporate appropriate symbolism for the particular couple.

For example, there are many colored gemstones that have historical associations to love. Red stones symbolize the heart, and thus, passion and a zest for life. With red, one instantly thinks of ruby, but the same symbolism can be conveyed very inexpensively with red garnet, or with a little larger budget, red tourmaline, or for a little more, red spinel. All natural gemstones, and all beautiful.

We can find similar choices for green (which symbolizes faithfulness and continuity) where choices include not only emerald, but green garnet or green tourmaline; for blue (which symbolizes spirituality and purity) in addition to sapphire we have blue spinel, iolite, and blue tourmaline. You might also combine whatever stone you choose with a small diamond on each side, thereby completing the ring with the symbolism of diamond, which, because of its unrivaled hardness was believed to be indestructible.

And lets not forget the gem that has been associated with love and with the wedding itself longer than all others, the pearl; one might seek a natural pearl in an antique or heirloom piece.

There is also a tradition of using a birthstone in the ring--hers or his--something connected to the couple in a very personal way, perhaps also combined with diamonds and their symbolism.

So whatever the budget, whatever the message, there are beautiful, rare, symbolic and precious choices. Just as you've found the "real thing" in your bride-to-be, go for the real thing in the ring you select. You can get her a CZ for the anniversary!

Gemstone buying Guide Series

Gemstones Buying Guide Series No.1

Colored Gem Price Factors :

Following factors can affect the prices of coloured gemstones:

-          Color

-          Clarity

-          Transparency

-          Shape

-          Cutting Style

-          Cut Quality

-          Carat Weight or stone size

-          Treatment status

-          Place of Origin

-          Distinctness of phenomena

Color plays a major role in gem pricing, but its impact varies depending on (1) quality. (2) size, (3) variety and (4) species of a gemstone.

Color has a greater effect on the price of a blue sapphire than on example a blue topaz or yellow sapphire.

-          In most cases, the stronger and more saturated the color, the more it is valued

-          In some cases, buyer/seller preferences impact prices more than the strength of the color

-          In most cases, the more greyish, brownish or blackish a gemstone is the lower its price

-          The more rare a color, the more it may be valued

-          In most cases, the lower the quality of a stone, the less impact color has on  price

-          Low price does not necessarily mean low desirability

Clarity is the degree to which a stone is free from flaws (inclusions and blemishes).  Usually the fewer, smaller and less noticeable the flaws, the higher the price, especially for higher priced gems such as rubies and emeralds.  However there is a greater tolerance for flaws in colored gems than in diamonds, and prices are typically based on the visual appearance of colored stones rather then on clarity grades. There is no universally accepted grading system for colored gems.  In some cases flaws may be a welcome sign that a stone is natural and not treated nor lab-grown.
